An entrepot in the early stages of development, Singapore is now preparing itself to move from an industrialized economy to a knowledge intensive information economy. Singapore has enjoyed remarkable economic growth in the past years. There has been tremendous growth in the IT industry in Singapore too. Information technology has become an indispensable phenomenon for Singaporeans starting from education to entertainment, from official work to everyday communication. The increasing number of BPO hubs and call centers in Singapore in recent times have also played an important role in further development of the IT sector. The incessant boom in IT industry has also created awareness among people regarding the need for computer literacy.
In 2006, the World Competitiveness report has ranked Singapore as the second most competitive country. From the year 1989 Singapore has also been equipped with an advanced telecommunication infrastructure - ISDN technology. Almost 30% of the households in Singapore have access to personal computers and the rest of 70% constitute the professional sector. As far as computer literacy amongst employees is concerned, Singapore was ranked second highest in the world.
The government of Singapore too has recognized the importance of the IT industry in its economic growth in the twenty-first century. The National Computer Board (NCB), which is an agency focused on the development of the IT sector in Singapore, was set up in 1981 by the government to build up a workforce for the IT industry in Singapore. It also has a target to enable Singapore to enter the information age.
The growth of the IT industry in Singapore has been remarkable over the last five years. On an average it has been approximately 18% per year, but in 1994 the growth was enormous at 34%. This so far has been the highest record. But the progression has nevertheless reduced. The government is ready to invest more in the IT industry to bring about more awareness among every man in the street
Education System plays an important role in any nation building process. Computers have become an inevitable part of education system for its administrative purposes in Singapore. Initiative has been taken by the government to provide schools with PC's and to link them to the rest of the world. Teachers and students are trained for handling the computers and using Internet.
Thus there has been an overall development of the IT industry in Singapore. It is still growing and will in no time become the forerunner of business development in the continent.
