Four Things to Look For When Choosing a Graphic Design Firm

Let's face it-sometimes you need more than the copy. Good graphics go hand in hand with good writing to sell your products and services. But it's important to choose a graphic design firm that's the right match for your project. Here are a few things to look for when choosing a graphic design firm to work with.

Experience in your field. Does the firm have experience doing the same type of project you're looking for? Different projects require different skills. If you're looking for a display for your next trade show appearance, it's best to choose a firm that has experience with trade show displays-not one that specializes in website design. Some firms are generalists that take on many types of projects, and there's nothing wrong with that-but make sure they have a few samples from projects like yours under their belt.

A solid history. You don't have to go with the most prestigious or high-priced firm to get a great product. But you should choose your graphic design firm with an eye toward their experience level. How long has the firm been in business? Do they have references or testimonials?

A good-looking portfolio. Check the firm's portfolio of work to see what type of style they have. Most individual designers have a unique style; does this firm's match what you want for your own project? It may help to talk to the designer as you look through the samples, and ask why she made specific choices for that particular job. This will help you understand how she makes her design choices-and how she might see your own project.

Lots of questions. The designer should ask you plenty of questions about your business, your audience, and what you hope to achieve with this piece. You should be prepared to answer questions on your customer demographics, your customers' hot-button issues, the "tone" you're looking for with this piece, and examples of the general type of work you'd like to see.

Your graphic designer can be a crucial partner in your marketing success. Take your time in choosing the right one, and you're sure to find a firm that works for you.
